Some Consequences Of Bituminous Mulches

This article investigates the consequences of using bituminous (oil-based) mulches in agriculture and construction projects. Results show that bitumen mulches increase soil temperature and help retain soil moisture. They are also effective in weed control and reducing soil erosion. However, improper use may lead to environmental pollution. The article emphasizes the importance of safe application and encourages exploring eco-friendly alternatives to mitigate environmental impacts.

Shifting Sands, Oil Mulch Technology, and Its Consequences

This in-depth interview explores the origin and development of oil mulch technology in Iran, as recounted by its pioneer Engineer Seyyed Mehdi Mahdavi and field expert Engineer Ghamreza Ahannin. Developed in the 1960s to combat desertification and control shifting sands, this innovative petroleum-based method was successfully deployed across Iran, including Khuzestan and Boein Zahra. The article discusses technical implementation, challenges, environmental impacts, and the continued relevance of this technology in addressing dust storms and land degradation.

Evaluation of Petroleum Mulching Effects on Soil Physico-Chemical Properties

This study examines the effects of petroleum mulching on soil physico-chemical properties in desert areas of Khuzestan province, Iran. Results indicate that petroleum mulch significantly alters soil temperature, moisture, EC, pH, and nutrients like potassium and phosphorus in the short term. Over time, these changes contribute to improved soil quality and vegetation cover. However, concerns remain about oil pollution and heavy metal accumulation.

Utilization of Waste Oil in Sand Dune Stabilization to Reduce Environmental Pollution

Oil drilling operations produce substantial amounts of waste, including drilling mud and heavy petroleum residues, which pose a serious threat to the environment. This study explores the reuse of such waste oils as mulch for stabilizing shifting sand dunes. This approach not only offers an effective means to reduce environmental pollution but also helps in controlling wind erosion and dust storms in arid regions. The economic analysis suggests that recycling waste oil in this way is more cost-effective than burning or burying it. The paper concludes with practical recommendations for implementing this solution as an environmentally friendly alternative in desert management.
