The Influence of Petroleum Mulch on the Germination and Yield of Tomatoes

August 11, 2025

This Utah State University research, conducted in 1968, investigated the effects of petroleum mulch on tomato seed germination and yield.

The results indicated that petroleum mulch helped improve soil moisture retention, reduce surface evaporation, and increase soil temperature. These changes contributed to faster and improved tomato seed germination under the tested conditions.

The study also reported higher final yield in mulch-treated plots compared with control plots, both in terms of fruit number and fruit weight. It emphasized that proper mulch layer thickness and careful application management are important for maximizing benefits while avoiding possible seed damage.

Key Findings

Evaluation Factor General Result
Soil Moisture Petroleum mulch helped retain soil moisture and reduce surface evaporation.
Soil Temperature The mulch layer improved soil temperature conditions, supporting faster germination.
Germination Tomato seed germination improved under petroleum mulch treatment in the tested conditions.
Final Yield Fruit number and fruit weight were higher in mulch-treated plots compared with control plots.
Application Management Proper mulch thickness and application method were important to achieve benefits and reduce possible seed damage.

Overall, the study suggests that petroleum mulch can improve tomato germination and yield when applied properly under suitable field conditions.
