A Study of the Influence of Petroleum Mulches on Several Herbicides

August 11, 2025

This study examined the influence of petroleum mulch on the performance of several preemergent herbicides with selected vegetable crops. The experiments were conducted at the Farmington Field Station of Utah State University.

The herbicides were applied at three different rates: half the recommended rate, the normal recommended rate, and twice the recommended rate. These treatments were evaluated both with and without petroleum mulch.

The results showed that, under the conditions of this study, petroleum mulch did not have a significant positive or negative effect on herbicide performance. Germination, general crop growth, weed control, and final yield were generally similar in treatments with petroleum mulch and without petroleum mulch.

Study Focus

  • Atrazine and Ramrod with sweet corn
  • PEBC and Diphenamid with tomato
  • EPTC and Trifluralin with snap beans

Results Summary

Evaluation Factor General Result
Germination Petroleum mulch did not show a significant effect on germination percentage or quality in the tested crops.
Crop Growth General crop growth was similar in treatments with petroleum mulch and without petroleum mulch.
Weed Control Combining petroleum mulch with herbicides did not significantly improve or reduce weed control.
Final Yield Crop yield was generally comparable between mulched and non-mulched treatments.

Overall, this study suggests that petroleum mulch, under the tested conditions, neither interfered with nor significantly enhanced the activity of the selected preemergent herbicides.
